On March the 7th, 1945, the Americans managed to capture this bridge, before the German troops were able to blow it up. This conquest went down in history as the "Wonder of Remagen", and helped the Allies accelerate the German capitulation. On the 17th of March in the same year, the bridge collapsed from overload. On this occasion, 28 Americans died. The bridge was never rebuilt.<br> Today, the remnants of the bridge-structure on the left side of the Rhine accommodate the peace-museum "Brücke von Remagen.
