 Bridge of Remagen
The railway bridge over the Rhine was built during the first World War, for
the purpose of bringing more troops and war materials to the western front. On March the
7th, 1945, the Americans managed to capture this bridge, before the German troops were
able to blow it up. This conquest went down in history as the "Wonder of
Remagen", and helped the Allies accelerate the German capitulation. On the 17th of
March in the same year, the bridge collapsed from overload. On this occasion, 28 Americans
died. The bridge was never rebuilt.
Today, the remnants of the bridge-structure on the left side of the Rhine accommodate the
peace-museum "Brücke von Remagen. Next to documentation of these historical events,
one can find a historical presentation of the Nobel Peace Prize, to which is added yearly.
